SELF-BREAST EXAM

Any unusual changes in your breast may be early signs of breast cancer.

Steps:

  • Stand before mirror
  • Compare the two breast
  • Observe the shape and size
  • Look with arms at the side, hands on the hips and arms raised above the head

It is not unusual for one breast to be larger than the other

Steps:

  • Examine each breast using the opposite hand
  • Place left hand at ear
  • Press left breast firmly with three right fingers
  • Feel area for lumps or thickening
  • Also feel for any lumps above and below your collar bone and armpit area

Do not squeeze nipples

Ways to feel:

  • During shower on soapy skin, or
  • Lie down with a rolled towel/pillow around your shoulder

Most breast lumps you can feel aren’t cancerous. They could be cysts or caused by a benign (non-cancerous) condition called fibroadenoma.
