Dysphagia Workshops 2018

In conjunction with May is Better Hearing and Speech Month (BHSM) 2018,
the Speech & Hearing Centre at Sunway Medical Centre will be organising 2 workshops for Speech-Language Therapist (SLTs).

Dysphagia Workshop for Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs)

The focus of multidisciplinary patient management has enabled and encouraged Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs) to play a vital role in ensuring safe swallowing amongst patients of varied diagnoses. There is an increase in the need for quality assured dysphagia management by SLTs due to an increase in the awareness amongst medical practitioners and the public.

However, due to lack of supervision or guidance, newly graduated SLTs and SLTs who are new to dysphagia management must strive to provide comprehensive management to this patient group. Therefore, this workshop aims to provide participants with the fundamentals in holistic management of adult patients with dysphagia.

Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) Workshop for Speech-Language Therapists (SLTs)

The Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Study (VFSS) is a commonly accepted “reference standard” instrumental evaluation technique for dysphagia as it provides the most comprehensive information of an individual’s swallowing structures and functions (O’Horo et al., 2015). However, due to the lack of training available in conducting VFSS in Malaysia, the number of SLTs trained and skilled in conducting VFSS is limited. Therefore this workshop aims to equip SLTs (with peer support) with the necessary knowledge and skills in setting up VFSS services and at the same time conducting VFSS for adults with dysphagia at their institutions.

Ms. Cecilia Santiago
Specialist Speech-Language Therapist, Speech Haven Enterprise

Cecilia is a Speech-Language Therapist with 20 years of experience and is equipt with an intimate knowledge of the best speech and language therapy practices employed in the United Kingdom (UK). Having worked within the National Health Service of the UK (in Edinburgh and Falkirk, Scotland) and the University of Newcastle from 1998 to 2006 and later in London from 2008-2009, she then returned to Malaysia to establish her private practise where she specialises in working with adults with speech, language, voice and swallowing disorders within Sunway Medical Centre, Assunta Hospital, the National Stroke Association of Malaysia while also providing some home visits to those who are immobile.

Cecilia’s career in dysphagia management was fueled and formalised when she attended a post-graduate dysphagia certification course in Sheffield, UK in 1999. Through the years, she has fine-tuned her skills specialising in dysphagia management by attending various courses to consolidate and update her knowledge and expertise especially when managing complex dysphagia cases in the areas of neurological care (both acute and progressive) and head and neck cancer care. During her work in Falkirk, Scotland, Cecilia assisted during weekly videofluoroscopy swallow study (VFSS) clinics. Later in London, she conducted weekly peer-run VFSS clinics and had the opportunity to collaborate with the multidisciplinary team (MDT)  in the management of dysphagia cases. Since working in Sunway Medical Centre, she has further developed this service and has trained various colleagues to conduct VFSS clinics. Cecilia believes that report-writing is pivotal in ensuring collaborative patient management in dysphagia care. She is very passionate about sharing with others the tools which she uses to assess, analyse, report and educate the patient, family members and the MDT to understand dysphagia care in an integrated manner.

Cecilia is registered with the Malaysian Association of Speech-Language and Hearing (MASH) as an Exco member and she is a member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists, UK (RCSLT).
