According to sleepfoundation.org, one of the important aspects of sleeping is that it helps us to consolidate our memories, and the reason for this is because our brain is always collecting information through our eyes when we are awake. Like how digital information is required to be stored (like how this content is being stored on this page), we can also store memories while we sleep – but even better.
Instead of directly logging down what we see every time, during our sleep, memories are consolidated as information are being transferred more tentatively, short-term memory to stronger, long-term memory. Researchers have managed to prove that after sleeping, people tend to retain information and they can perform better on memory related tasks.
