Meet Dr Anis, The Heart Behind Pediatric Intensive Care at Sunway Medical Centre
10 February 2025
Working in a hospital can be hard. But for Dr Anis Siham binti Zainal Abidin, a paediatric intensivist at Sunway Medical Centre, it is her passion. She cares for very sick children in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), where every second counts. Her job requires quick thinking, teamwork, and a deep understanding of young patients.
A Passion for Paediatric Intensive Care
Dr Anis did not have one single moment that led her to this career. Many experiences shaped her journey. She has always been curious about how the body works. She also feels a deep connection to children, especially those who are very ill.
“I love helping people, especially children, because they are so vulnerable when sick,” she says. “Seeing their strength and the hard work of doctors inspired me.” Watching young patients fight to recover made her sure she wanted to do this job.
Working in the PICU is tough. Things change fast, and emotions run high. But for Dr. Anis, helping children get better makes it all worth it.
Finding Her Path in Paediatric Intensive Care
Dr Anis always loved science and helping others. But two things helped her decide to be a doctor—her father’s support and volunteering at a children's hospital. Seeing doctors save young lives made her want to be part of that world.
“Watching sick children fight to get better and seeing how doctors cared for them made me want to help too.” That experience showed her the strength of young patients. It also proved how much doctors can do to help. From that moment, she knew she wanted to work in paediatric critical care.
Becoming A PICU Specialist
Paediatrics covers many areas, but Dr. Anis was drawn to PICU. “The serious illnesses, the fast-paced work, and the chance to keep learning make it exciting,” she explains.
In the PICU, doctors must make fast decisions and stay calm in emergencies. “Helping a very sick child and making quick decisions is hard but rewarding.”
Beyond medicine, the PICU is also about supporting families. Parents feel scared and helpless when their child is in intensive care. Dr. Anis believes offering comfort is just as important as medical care.
She works with a team to give children the best care possible. “It’s an honour to help children get better,” she says. Despite the challenges, Dr. Anis wouldn’t choose any other job. Her love for saving young lives keeps her going every day.
Thank you Dr Anis for your dedication and service to the children and families every day.
