Meet Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) Specialist, Dr Vicky Ho

Dr Vicky Ho, Consultant Obstetrics and Gynaecologist (O&G) sitting in her clinic

Dr Vicky Ho never planned to be an obstetrician and gynaecologist (O&G). “Honestly, it wasn’t my first choice. In medical school, I was more interested in internal medicine, cardiology, or neurology,” she admits.

But everything changed during her housemanship in Sarawak. “The hands-on experience, the guidance and the adrenaline rush of the job made me choose O&G.”

Dr Vicky focuses on high-risk pregnancies. “This includes cases where the mother has medical conditions. For example, pregnancy complications, multiple pregnancies, or abnormal genetic test results,” she explains.

Bringing New Lives Into the World

Despite everything, Dr Vicky loves her work. “Helping mothers safely deliver their babies is the best feeling.”

She remembers a patient who was told she could never have a baby. “With the right care and monitoring, we made it possible. Seeing her hold her baby was incredible.”

Clearing Up Pregnancy Myths

Many pregnancy myths still exist. “Some think you need to eat for two. Others believe you must gain a lot of weight or avoid exercise.”

Dr Vicky teaches her patients with real examples. “Some mothers gain 10–20 kg, but their baby is still growing normally and have healthy babies.”

Handling Emotional Challenges

Working in an O&G hospital can be emotionally difficult. “We see life and death every day. Over time, we learn to control our emotions, but some cases still affect us.”

Losing a baby or a mother is never easy. “Sometimes, I can't control my tears. But showing empathy is important. Patients need to know we care.”

Balancing Work and Personal Life

Balancing work and personal life is hard, but Dr Vicky has a supportive husband.

“Before joining Sunway Medical Centre, I moved a lot. I’ve worked in Sarawak, Johor, Seremban, and even a year in the UK. We spent a lot of time apart, but he always supported my career.”

Now, she makes time for him through dinner and travel.

“I enjoy cooking, especially Western food,” she shares. “I used to cook a lot more when I was working in the government hospital. Back then my schedule was predictable. Now, I cook whenever I can.”

Her Love for Food and Travel

Dr Vicky also loves travelling. “We’re going to Japan at the end of the year,” she shares.

Japan is special to her. Not just for its food and culture, but because she met her husband there. “We’ve visited other parts of Japan, but never Tokyo. This year, we’re finally exploring the city. After that, we’ll see more of the country.”

Her Advice for Future O&G Specialists

Thinking about O&G? Dr. Vicky has some advice: “Get hands-on experience first. Some start without knowing the demands and later realize it’s not for them.”

The job requires dedication. “Labour is unpredictable. You have to be ready.”

For Dr. Vicky, it’s more than a job. “My job is to keep mothers and babies safe. That means everything to me.”

Thank you, Dr Vicky. Your dedication to women’s health continues to inspire us.
