Dr Pradesh performs first Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosytemic Shunt

In April 2025, the first Transjugular Intrahepatic Portosytemic Shunt (TIPS) in Sunway Medical Centre was performed successfully by Dr Pradesh (Interventional Radiologist, SunMed) together with the Catheterization Laboratory team utilizaing the Argon Traveler Portal Vein Access system.

TIPS is a minimally invasive procedure performed under general anaesthesia in which a pathway is created connecting the portal vein to hepatic vein with X-ray guidance. A stent is applied to maintain this connection to ensure continuous blood flow.

The procedure is indicated for managing complications of portal hypertension such as persistent oesophageal or stomach bleed and persistent abdominal fluid (ascites).

These complications commonly arise due to elevated blood pressure in the portal vein, often seen in patients with chronic liver disease and liver scarring (cirrhosis).

Clinical studies have shown that TIPS can effectively reduce oesophageal bleeding in more than 90% of patients1

By introducing advanced, specialized and comprehensive procedures like TIPS, Sunway Medical Centre reaffirms its commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
